Indonesia is gearing up to enter its long-term development phase planning that covers the next 20 years. USAID will work with local governments, CSOs, and the private sector to improve access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation as a clear sign of support to Indonesia’s development objectives.
USAID’s flagship climate-resilient water and sanitation activity (USAID IUWASH Tangguh) assisted 24 district and city governments in South Sulawesi in preparing safely managed sanitation targets for each of the municipalities. The municipal-level targets will contribute to the province’s 15% safely managed sanitation target for 2030.
Districts and cities expressed their enthusiasm to support the provincial government in achieving its sanitation targets and have recommended several improvements in regulation, infrastructure, and increased workforce capacity. During the virtual meeting on the city and district’s sanitation targets on January 4th, 2024, the South Sulawesi Regional Development Planning Agency (Bappeda) representative reiterated that the safely managed sanitation targets is integral to their development planning documents and will be integrated into the province’s sanitation road map.
USAID IUWASH Tangguh will continue to assist relevant stakeholders at the provincial and district level to develop consensus on the city/district’s sanitation targets and support Indonesia improve human capital through a healthier population.
