USAID IUWASH Tangguh installed a hydrodoser chlorination system in a community-based water supply system (SPAM Komunal/Sistem Penyediaan Air Minum Komunal) that serves 33 households in Kedungsari village in Magelang city on May 23rd–25th, 2023. At the same time, USAID IUWASH tangguh also trained the community-based caretaker group to install and maintain the system.
Community-based water supply systems usually do not have a chlorination system. As such, the water coming from the system is very likely contaminated by bacteria that can bring adverse health effects. Thus, USAID IUWASH Tangguh piloted the installation of the hydrodoser chlorination system in a SPAM Komunal in Magelang city.
A hydrodoser chlorination system is considered suitable for SPAM Komunal due to its low installation and maintenance cost (IDR 5 million per system), greater longevity, and ability to serve up to 1,000 people. Additionally, the system is also easy to maintain.
The caretaker group of SPAM Komunal in Magelang city feels gratitude for having this chlorination system. “Installation of the hydrodoser chlorination system is a new experience and lesson for us. We are delighted to learn how to install and operate the system to increase the SPAM Komunal water quality,” said Ary Hanafi, the Chairperson of the caretaker group of Kedungsari village SPAM Komunal. The group also promised to maintain the system well.
If the pilot project of the hydrodoser chlorination system in SPAM Komunal in Magelang works well and sustains, USAID IUWASH Tangguh will replicate the system in other areas by collaborating with national and local governments and other key stakeholders.
The hydrodoser chlorination system is a low-cost gravity powered chlorination system developed by AguaClara Reach (a U.S. non-governmental organization). In Indonesia, the system was prototyped a Jakarta Intercultural School’s student, Austin Ho.
