On Wednesday (March 22nd, 2023), Neneh Diallo, USAID Chief DEIA Officer, visited Magelang city to observe roles of women and community members in the implementation of the five Pillars of Community-Based Total Sanitation (STBM) and expansion of safely managed drinking water and sanitation.
During that visit, Neneh Diallo got insights into the roles of the city’s Sanitation Ambassador, Niken Ichtiaty, in advocating STBM implementation and safely managed drinking water and sanitation improvement, as well as mainstreaming gender in the two sectors.
The Sanitation Ambassador assisted the community cadre with the 5N principles, namely Ngemong (to become a story-sharing friend ), Ngayomi (to support the cadre), Ngandani (to remind the cadre), Nguwongke (to believe in the cadre’s ability), and Ngguyubi (to embrace the cadre).
During a visit to Bogeman Wetan hamlet in Panjang urban village, Neneh Diallo also had a met with Tembang Tidar Forum to discuss the forum’s works in campaigning for safely managed drinking water and sanitation at the community level through a participatory approach.
The visit was continued by directly witnessing the house of a villager having a toilet with septic tank. the villager, Maryono(68), said that having a toilet and a septic tank at home made him feel safer to do his business. Earlier, he had to do his business on the riverside. He worried about snake bites or increasing river water debit during rainy season.
Also, Neneh Diallo met with Magelang City Government to discuss gender mainstreaming and its impact on development.
Neneh Diallo expressed her joy and honor at being able to visit the Magelang city to learn more about cooperation between the Government of Indonesia (GOI) and the U.S. Government through USAID.
“Together, we help people to have equal access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation,” said Neneh.
