This week, USAID IUWASH Tangguh regional teams began conducting formative research through focus group discussions and key informant interviews with more than 200 respondents in four cities in North Sumatra, East Java, South Sulawesi, and West Kalimantan.
Through this activity, USAID IUWASH Tangguh collected information on community perceptions, activities, understanding, and communication channels related to the importance of safely managed drinking water and sanitation access and willingness to pay for drinking water and sanitation services.
The formative research performed by USAID IUWASH Tangguh complements the similar activity carried out by the previous USAID IUWASH PLUS program and it uses qualitative methods including focus group discussions and key informant interviews targeting local community leaders as resource persons. USAID IUWASH Tangguh will collect the data from 12 districts/cities.
Aside from the activities carried out this week, USAID IUWASH Tangguh will continue collecting information in other areas in April 2023. The information collected from the focus group discussions and key informant interviews will be analyzed and the results will contribute to the development of social behavior change strategies and key message campaigns related to WASH service willingness to pay and water resources management.
USAID IUWASH Tangguh will use these evidence-based social behavior change strategies to influence social norm formation, spur consumer awareness, and change collective behaviors around WASH and water resources management.
