The Vice Mayor of Magelang City, M. Manyur, together with the Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure of Bappenas, Ervan Maksum; the USAID Indonesia Mission Director, Jeff Cohen; and the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of BPR Bank Magelang, Hery Nurjianto, attended the launch of the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) program for desludging services in Kedungsari village, Magelang city.
The event was organized by USAID IUWASH Tangguh on July 7, 2023, to boost the achievement of 100 percent access to safely managed sanitation in Magelang city.
The program launch was marked by ceremonial desludging at the house of Didin Jalaludin, a resident of Kedungsari urban vllage. The event began with the handover of a sticker from the Vice Mayor of Magelang City, M. Mansyur, to the CEO of BPR Bank Magelang, Hery Nurjianto. The sticker was then pasted on the wall of Didin’s house.
The desludging was carried out symbolically by the USAID Indonesia Mission Director, Jeffrey Cohen; the Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure of Bappenas, Ervan Maksum; and the Vice Mayor of Magelang City, M. Mansyur.
Didin admitted that he wanted his septic tank emptied but couldn’t afford the cost. Besides, he did not know where to contact for the desludging service.
Then, Didin received information on a desludging service from the head of the RT/RW, who previously attended the information dissemination of desludging services from the Public Works and Housing Office (DPUPR).
“I got the information on the desludging from the head of RT/RW (a small neighborhood), who previously attended the dissemination of desludging services from the DPUPR,” he said.
Didin received the desludging service for free because he belongs to the low-income group. Didin is one of the beneficiaries of the Corporate Social Responsibility for desludging service that USAID IUWASH Tangguh and Magelang city government have initiated.
In the ceremony, USAID IUWASH Tangguh also sought additional contributions from private sector, which resulted in supports from eight private companies and USAID Indonesia Mission Director. The contribution from the private sector, including BPR Bank Magelang, and USAID Indonesia Mission Director reached IDR 37,740,000 to help 222 families receive desludging services.
There was also an auction of CSR for desludging services during the launch. The auction offered ten CSR packages to BUMDs and the private sector joining the Magelang City CSR Forum.
The auction generated CSR funds from eight companies and assistance from the USAID Indonesia Mission Director, Jeffrey Cohen. As many as 222 households will benefit from the CSR program with a total fund of IDR 37,740,000.
The launch of the CSR for desludging services was part of the visit of the Deputy for Facilities and Infrastructure of Bappenas and the USAID Indonesia Mission Director to Magelang City. During the visit, Bappenas, USAID, the Mayor, and the Vice Mayor of Magelang City discussed strategies to provide access to safely managed water and sanitation services.
“The Magelang City Government currently involves more parties implementing various strategies and innovations. An example includes engaging Bank Magelang to support the desludging program. Hopefully, with so many parties involved, it will be easier to implement the strategies and achieve more optimal results,” said Nur Aziz, the Mayor of Magelang City.
The USAID Indonesia Mission Director, Jeff Cohen, highly appreciated the commitment and strategies of the Magelang city government to expand safely managed drinking water and sanitation access. “I appreciate the strategies and innovations of the Magelang City Government to improve raw water supply, expand access to drinking water, and promote safely managed sanitation through regular desludging of septic tanks. Hopefully, our collaboration will help create a healthy and resilient community in Magelang,” he said.
