On August 9, 2024, USAID IUWASH Tangguh facilitated 20 representatives from East Java Provincial Government to observe the city’s groundwater recharge initiative using infiltration ponds in Salatiga city, Central Java. During a previous collaboration with the USAID IUWASH PLUS program and the Coca-Cola Foundation Indonesia, the Salatiga city government established 820 infiltration ponds in the Senjoyo spring catchment area.
The city’s groundwater recharge initiative using infiltration ponds in the Senjoyo spring catchment area successfully increased the PDAM’s spring water yield from 800 to 1,100 liters per second within two years.
By adopting successful infiltration pond technology and collaborative process with the community in Senjoyo, the East Java provincial government aims to boost the water quantity of Umbulan spring in Pasuruan district, a crucial raw water source for five major cities and districts in the region. The spring water flow declined from 4,528 liters per second in 1992 to 2,349 liters per second in January 2024, which threatens to impact water services.
USAID IUWASH Tangguh will assist in developing infiltration ponds in the Umbulan spring catchment area, following the successful model from Senjoyo.
