USAID IUWASH PLUS conducted a training on communal bio-filter pre-construction for community organizations in Sukun and Tanjungrejo urban villages on August 15, 2019 in Tanjungrejo urban village, Malang City.
Present at the event were community organizations from Sukun and Tanjungrejo urban villages, the head and staff of Tanjungrejo urban village, the staff of Sukun urban village, and the chairpersons of the urban village community empowerment organization (LPMK) and the community self-help organization (BKM).
Tanjungrejo and Sukun urban villages received a 2019 general budget allocation (DAU) from the national government in the amount of IDR 352 million each for infrastructure and non-infrastructure purposes. Each of these villages will use the budget to build five to six communal bio-filters to service around 60 houses.
This pre-construction training aimed at improving the participants’ knowledge of safely-managed sanitation and equipping them with technical information on bio-filter construction, including how to reduce and mitigate any issues related to construction health and safety.
The participants will start construction within this month with expected completion in October 2019. USAID IUWASH PLUS will support the community organizations to socialize the communal bio-filters to the beneficiaries and other community members. After the construction process completed, USAID IUWASH PLUS will also provide the community organizations with operations and maintenance training, for improved sustainability.
“The community can easily accept constructions of drainages and roads, but sometimes they refuse and resist the constructions of sanitation infrastructures. Therefore, socializations and raising awareness on safely-managed sanitation is very important” said Lalu Efendi Hidayat, the Head of Tanjungrejo urban village.
