USAID IUWASH PLUS conducted a training of trainers (ToT) on urban WASH promotion for the internal team throughout the region. The training held on January 8-10, 2018 in Makassar was aimed at enabling the internal teams to facilitate the strengthening of the behavior change promotion teams in each target city/district and providing input for improving the existing WASH promotion guidebooks in urban areas. The training was attended by 21 participants from USAID IUWASH PLUS staff comprised of BC/M Specialists, and Urban Sanitation Specialists and Associates, as well as WASH facilitators selected from all regional offices. The training of trainers was facilitated by an expert consultant and assisted by the BC/M Specialists from the Central Java and East Java regions who have previously participated in the similar training.
The materials used for this training are the Urban WASH Promotion ToT module and the Urban WASH Promotion Handbook. Based on these materials, the training was divided into eight sessions using andragogy method and a contextual participatory approach so that the potential trainers could understand each material well and are able to adopt the materials based on the local context in their respective areas. In each session, the materials were also evaluated to improve the handbook, which will be used as one of WASH promotion media in urban areas.
The participants admitted that the training was very useful. “With this training, our promotion strategy in the household becomes more focused so that later the impact can be measured and sustainable,” said Deasy Sekar (USAID IUWASH PLUS CEM Specialist), one of the training participants. This training also provided more feasible promotional plans and strategies in each city/district assisted by USAID IUWASH PLUS. “The follow-up plan we made from this training will help us coordinate with local partners to improve the competence of the promotion team in the community,” said Lidiastuty Anwar, WASH Facilitator from the South Sulawesi and Eastern Indonesia region. Following this training, the training participants will conduct trainings for the local Urban WASH promotion team in each assisted city and district. The training on urban WASH promotion is expected to build the capacity of the WASH promotional team to increase the demand and supply of the households to WASH products/services, as well as the commitment of households to perform the suggested hygiene behavior.
