BAZNAS (National Zakat Board) in Barru district is committed to contributing to improvement of the community’s sanitation access.
To materialize its commitment, BAZNAS in Barru district is building septic tanks for 100 low-income households in six urban villages, namely Palanro, Mallawa, Takkalasi, Sumpang Bingange, Mangempan, dan Mangkoso. The construction process involves community members.
In order to ensure the septic tanks are properly built and well-functioning, USAID IUWASH PLUS trained the village representatives and masons, the volunteers of BAZNAS Active Service (LAB), and POKJA PPAS to properly supervise and assist the communities in building septic tanks.
This training was held through an online platform on June 11-12, 2020.
Participating in the training were the Head of Bappeda of Barru district, Mr. Umar S, members of the POKJA PPAS (the Working Group for Housing, Settlement, Water, and Sanitation) of Barru District, such as Bappeda, the district health office, the housing and settlement office, and the environment office, the coordinator of BAZNAS Active Service (LAB) of Barru district, as well as the LAB volunteers, the head of villages and masons from six villages receiving the septic tank donations from BAZNAS.
During the training, the participants received knowledge on importance of having toilets with septic tanks and the various septic tank models based on ground water levels.
In their opinion, the training has helped them understand the septic tank construction methods and safely managed sanitation.
The Head of Bappeda in Barru District, Mr. Umar S, explained that this training is a support from USAID IUWASH PLUS to the district government to achieve safely-managed sanitation.
“We are grateful for USAID IUWASH PLUS supports. We have promoted healthy toilets construction yet they are not safe since septage still contaminates groundwater. USAID IUWASH PLUS helps us to achieve safely managed sanitation, among others is through this training,” he said.
