February 8, 2021, Based on the water quality and quantity monitoring conducted by USAID IUWASH PLUS and Akatirta in 2019, Clumprit spring’s water debit has decreased 2.3 liter per second every year from 2014 to 2019. This needs to be a concern considering that Clumprit is one of the water sources in Malang City.
Malang Mayor, Mr. Sutiaji, signed the spring vulnerability assessment and action plan (KKMA-RA) document for Clumprit spring and, on behalf of the city government, accepted 15 piloted infiltration ponds from USAID IUWASH PLUS. Also present in this discussion were the regional secretary, Mr. Wasto; the Head of Bappeda, Mrs. Dwi Rahayu; and the Executive Director of PDAM of Malang city, Mr. M. Noor Muhlas.
Clumprit spring is one of the raw water sources that Perumda Air Minum Tugu Tirta will use to support its plan, namely serving 5,600 new house connections from 2020 to 2024.
In order to increase Clumprit spring’s water debit, the KKMARA recommends the construction of 1,400 infiltration ponds in the spring water catchment areas, some of which are located in Malang district
As part of the USAID IUWASH PLUS project’s technical assistance, the project through Yayasan Lingkungan Hidup Sukoliman (under the LSIC scheme) implemented capacity building program to improve knowledge and skills of the relevant government working units and community in Malang city to implement of the infiltration pond program from July 2020 to February 2021. The capacity building program included construction of 15 piloted infiltration ponds in Selorejo and Petungsewu villages in Malang district—both are the Clumprit spring’s water catchment areas. “Infiltration pond have become a priority and shared commitment in protecting the environment of each urban village in Malang,” said Sutiaji, Monday (8/2/2021).
In addition to the construction of the 15 piloted infiltration ponds, Perumda Air Minum Tugu Tirta has included the plan of building 200 ponds every year in its business plan for the period of 2020-2024. The city government plans to instruct provide financial supports to each village to build 10 infiltration ponds every year.
