On October 28th, 2022, the Deputy Director of Environment Office of USAID Indonesia, Mark Newton, along with USAID IUWASH Tangguh team had a courtessy meeting with the Head of Maros District (Bupati Maros), Andi Syafril Chaidir Syam, to introduce USAID IUWASH Tangguh’s five-year program to the district government.
Mark Newton highlighted that USAID IUWASH Tangguh will support the district government to increase the access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation and conduct climate change adaptation activities to sustain PDAM’s raw water and water services.
In the meeting, Bupati Maros also shared the government’s plans to increase access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation. In sanitation sector, the district government plans to rehabilitate the septage treatment plant, including establishing the operator to maintain the facility. In water sector, the district government plans to increase the capacity of Bantimurung water treatment plant and allocate budget to build piping networks for Mamminasata regional SPAM (water supply system).
“In the future, we will identify several pilot areas for water and sanitation that will receive assistance from USAID IUWASH Tangguh. We will direct the programs from SKPD (local government working units) to ensure that the progress are observable and measurable,” Bupati Maros added.
Aside from meeting Bupati Maros, Mark Newton and team also visited Bantimurung Water Treatment Plant to observe the water treatment process and water testing laboratory.
