Ternate City has beautiful attractions ranging from the natural resource to its culture. The city has natural landscape from fascinating white sandy beaches to enchanting forests. Some of the beaches even have crystal clear water, so we can enjoy the colorful underwater scenery.
Behind its beautiful landscape, Ternate still faces several challenges, such as water supply and sanitation (WASH). The position of the city located on the slope of Mount Gamalama causes more rain water quickly runs out to the sea, even the area of water absorption is reduced as the development of residential areas. In the sanitation sector, the challenges faced are generally related to the condition of domestic wastewater management that discharging waste directly to the nearest water bodies, thus causing pollution of ground water, water bodies and the environment.
“The Ternate city currently has considerable challenges in the aspects of basic infrastructure services, such as water supply and basic sanitation. High population growth will also affect water supply demand and sanitation provision, “said Vice Mayor of Ternate, Abdullah Taher in his speech when opening the Workshop of CSR Mutual Home in Ternate on July 27, 2017.
CSR Mutual Home is a strategy and approach offered by USAID IUWASH PLUS to Ternate City Government in order to build CSR partnership with private sector. The concept of CSR Mutual Home was warmly received by the Ternate City Government. “Achieving access to water supply and sanitation requires a substantial budget allocation, meanwhile, the budget availability is quite limited. So, on this occasion, the partnership to be built through the CSR Mutual Home is expected to overcome the problem, it can be complementary, and it can provide benefits for the people of Ternate City today and in the future,” added Abdullah Taher.
The results of the CSR Mutual Home Workshop were very good. USAID IUWASH PLUS together with the Ternate City Government agreed to launch the CSR Partnership Program in October 2017. In addition, it was also agreed that the working Group of Water Supply and Sanitation (Pokja AMPL) will be responsible for coordinating the partnership by using the CSR Mutual Home approach. The Pokja AMPL was chosen because it was considered having the ability to coordinate and represent various SKPDs and institutions responsible in the water supply and sanitation sector.
The workshop is a follow-up of the Ternate City commitment to address the water supply and sanitation issues in the city by establishing multi-stakeholder partnerships, including with the private sector through the corporate social responsibility (CSR) program. “The governance of the CSR partnership in Ternate City is very important,” stated Ternate Mayor Burhan Abdurahman during a meeting with the USAID IUWASH PLUS team in mid-May 2017.
Support for CSR also came from the banking sector. Jarot U. W. Susanto, Deputy Director for Bank Indonesia of Ternate City stated the willingness to facilitate the communication with the banking companies in Ternate City through BMPD (Regional Banking Consultative Body). The similar statement was also expressed by Aditya Mahendra, Director for Branch Office of BRI Ternate City who will facilitate the communication with the State-owned Enterprises (BUMN) in Ternate City.
There is a great expectation on the implementation of CSR in Ternate City. “The fulfillment of access to water supply and sanitation requires the collaboration of various parties. Therefore, CSR with the CSR Mutual Home approach is present in Ternate City as a media for collaboration and partnership that is expected to combine various ideas to realize the achievement of Universal Access 2019,” asserted Abdullah Taher.
