Supporting the piloting of Non-Revenue Water (NRW) management in Surakarta and Magelang cities, USAID IUWASH PLUS presented the results of the water balance study in PDAM Magelang and Perumda Air Minum Surakarta to the Board of Directors of the respective drinking water company in the workshops held consecutively in Surakarta city on September 18, 2018 and in Magelang city on September 19, 2018.
USAID IUWASH PLUS through Tirta Wiyata Academy (Akatirta, a university partner of USAID IUWASH PLUS) conducted the study from June–September 2018 to support the development of NRW feasibility guideline. The guideline cover the templates on the NRW program development, SOP development, zoning and District Metered Area (DMA) establishment, and financial analysis.
The water balance study found that the NRW level of Perumda Air Minum Surakarta reaches 45% or equal to 10,720,203 m3/year, and the NRW level of PDAM Magelang reaches 43% or equal to 6,393,203m3/year. The study found that physical water loss is the predominant factor causing the high NRW level. The physical water loss in Perumda Air Minum Surakarta reaches 37% and in PDAM Magelang 34.9%.
The study also found that Perumda Air Minum Surakarta has 21 service hours and PDAM Magelang has 19.6 service hours. The study results motivated these PDAMs to develop the NRW feasibility study guideline and reduce the NRW.
The Executive Director of Perumda Air Minum Surakarta, Maryanto highly appreciated USAID IUWASH PLUS for assisting municipal drinking water companies to reduce NRW. “I would like to thank USAID IUWASH PLUS for supporting our efforts to reduce NRW. “I hope PDAM will use the water balance study findings as a reference for preparing the NRW feasibility study [guideline],” said Maryanto.
After the presentation, USAID IUWASH PLUS will continue to assist the PDAMs with the development of the NRW feasibility study guideline based on the study findings, and making priority programs after the guideline developed.
