Mebidang Regional Water Supply System is a national project built to supply water to 88,000 households or around 440,000 people in Medan, Binjai, and Deli Serdang in North Sumatra. The President of Indonesia inaugurated the water treatment system on August 25th, 2023. Currently, the Ministry of Public Works and Housing (MPWH) is conducting commissioning tests to the plant and distribution network before handing them over to North Sumatra Water Utility operator.
On October 20th, 2023, the Principal Officer of the U.S. Consulate in Medan, Mr. Bernard Uadan, visited Binjai city to observe the results of the collaboration between USAID IUWASH Tangguh, local governments, and other stakeholders in the construction and operation of SPAM Regional MEBIDANG.
Mr. Uadan observed the Marcapada, one of SPAM Regional MEBIDANG’s water treatment plants in Binjai, which supplies clean water to the city of Binjai and the adjacent district of Deli Serdang.
“Through the USAID IUWASH Tangguh program, the U.S. Government supports Government of Indonesia to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals for 2030—universal access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation by improving [drinking water and sanitation] access for millions of people from vulnerable groups. The visit today shows the significance of SPAM Regional MEBIDANG to distribute and provide universal access to safely managed drinking water and sanitation for citizens,” highlighted the Principal Officer.
During the visit, the Principal Officer also witnessed the signing of an agreement between the city’s water utility and BPRS Puduarta Insani (a local bank) to offer microcredit financing for new house meter connections and spoke with potential beneficiaries.
USAID IUWASH Tangguh supports the provincial government to review the SPAM Regional water tariff, develop an agreement between the MPWH and off-takers, and continue the legacy of its predecessors, IUWASH and IUWASH PLUS, in ensuring the SPAM Regional MEBIDANG serves clean drinking water to the larger population in the region.
