USAID IUWASH PLUS and Jayapura city Bappeda held an interactive dialog with the key figures to promote IPAL Komunal (communal wastewater treatment plant) facility in kelurahan Imbi, Jayapura city on May 30, 2018. The Public Works Office of Papua province through the 2017 Sanimas program built the facility.
This activity involved the Jayapura city administration, Sanimas program, and several key figures consisting of public figures and religious leaders in the community, and aimed to encourage the community to connect their houses to the IPAL Komunal facility. The head of Social and Cultural Division of Jayapura city Bappeda, Ety Asmuruf opened the interactive dialog attended by the community representatives from RT (the smallest neighborhood unit) 03/08 of kelurahan Imbi and RT 04/05 of kelurahan Trikora. Subsequently, the key figures and Sanimas and USAID IUWASH PLUS facilitators discussed the background on why the community has yet to have house connection to the IPAL Komunal facility and the benefits of having the connection.
From this interactive dialog, some members of community, mostly from kelurahan Trikora enthused about connecting their houses to the IPAL Komunal facility. The head of RT 04/05 in kelurahan Trikora, Yance Suruan, admitted that this program is very good and he is ready to encourage the community in his RT to connect to the facility. “This is the best solution for sanitation problem in this area, where most of the people here do not have septic tank and all drains directly go the river,” he added. Following this activity, USAID IUWASH PLUS will carry out promotional and dissemination activities in these two kelurahan to encourage more people to have house connection to the IPAL Komunal facility.
