On July 2, 2021, USAID IUWASH PLUS collaborated with Pokja PPAS (the Working Group for Housing, Settlement, Water, and Sanitation) and KOTAKU (Kota Tanpa Kumuh or City Without Slums) hosted NgeLantur to discuss the importance of promoting behavioral change to attain sustainable access to safe water and safely managed sanitation.
NgeLanTur (Ngobrol Lentur Urusan Perumahan dan Permukiman—Casual Talk on Housing and Settlement) is a weekly webinar that serves as a platform for informally discussing housing and settlement issues.
Acting as the speakers were the Behavioral Change and Marketing Specialist of USAID IUWASH PLUS, Ms. Ratih A. Dewi; a representative from the District Health Office of Bekasi City, Ms. Susilo Heni; and the Coordinator of the Participatory M&E Team in Sulamadaha urban village in Ternate city, Mr. Faisal Taher Waiola.
Ms. Ratih A. Dewi, initiated the discussion by providing an overview of the USAID IUWASH PLUS programs, especially those concering behavior change.
Mr. Faisal Taher Waiola then shared his experience in leading a Participatory M&E Team in Ternate city, which was established with support from USAID IUWASH PLUS, and presented lessons to ensure Participatory M&E Teams can operate sustainably. “I hope the STBM working teams are soon established in all villages in Ternate city. Currently, only 8 villages have the working teams,” said Mr. Faisal Taher.
In addition, Ms. Susilo Heni explained that a regional government can induce behavioral change through various initiatives, such as #TetanggaPanutan.
This was the fourth time USAID IUWASH PLUS collaborated with Pokja PPAS and KOTAKU to discuss WASH issues on NgeLanTur. The previous episodes discussed (1) safely managed sanitation in densely populated urban areas, (2) master meter to deliver safe water in informal residential areas, and (3) infiltration ponds to recharge shallow aquifers and guarantee water supply.
USAID IUWASH PLUS is going to support another NgeLanTur session on the effective and efficient community-government communication for improved WASH services in the next week.
