USAID IUWASH Tangguh E-Newsletter 6th Edition, December 2024

A Word from USAID IUWASH Tangguh
Welcome to the sixth edition of the USAID IUWASH Tangguh e-newsletter!
This special edition is published to commemorate World Toilet Day, celebrated on November 19th each year. It is an important day dedicated to raising awareness on the importance of sanitation and hygiene. This year’s theme, “Toilets – A Place for Peace,” emphasizes the role of sanitation as a tool for fostering peace and increasing public and environmental health. It is a moment to reaffirm our commitment to collaborate with partners, including government, private sector, communities, and youth in addressing sanitation challenges, while also focusing on water, hygiene, and water resources management.
In this edition, we proudly highlight our collaboration with young people to take on active roles as public educators for safely managed sanitation. By empowering young people to spread awareness and drive change in their communities, we aim to build a resilient future in the face of increasing impacts of climate change.
We also share the uplifting journey of a vulnerable beneficiary from Central Java who has seen significant strides in improving his quality of life after receiving a sanitation grant from the district government. This edition also features a video story about a female volunteer in Sidoarjo district, East Java who played a significant role in improving the health of her neighborhood by encouraging residents to use the regular desludging service.
In addition to stories on sanitation, we also feature an inspiring story from South Central Timor district, East Nusa Tenggara province, where a remarkable local leader has emerged as an environmental champion. In addition, our ongoing efforts to build capacity and competency of water utilities’ staff in energy management are also featured in this edition.
As we celebrate World Toilet Day, we reaffirm our dedication to broaden positive impact to our beneficiaries. We invite you to join us in ensuring that all communities have the right to access safely managed sanitation and drinking water, while safeguarding the sustainability of our water resources.
Happy Reading!
