First, we wish you Happy Eid Mubarak 1439 H. On this auspicious occasion, may we become better people. This USAID IUWASH PLUS e-newsletter, June 2018 edition, presents interesting stories on the transformation of individuals, community members, and government institutions to improve people’s access to safely managed sanitation and water, and to support the safely managed sanitation practice. As part of World Water Day 2018 celebration, USAID IUWASH PLUS held a workshop on infiltration ponds and invited journalists from national and local media to learn about the benefits of infiltration ponds to groundwater conservation in Patemon Village, Semarang. To improve community’s access to water, the people from some sub-villages in Salatiga City participated in planning, development, and management of communal water supply systems (SPAM Komunal). In the sanitation sector, several community members have started to switch from poor sanitation to safely managed sanitation. In North Sumatra, some people in Tebing Tinggi City self-funded their septic tank construction as an initial step of safely managed sanitation. Also, Alfiyah, a cadre of family welfare movement of Bogor City, actively promoted scheduled desludging services to the people in her neighborhood and other regions in Bogor City. In addition to changes at community level, government institutions have made breakthroughs to improve access to safely managed sanitation and leverage their performance. The Offices of Health and Public Works in Ternate City used results of participatory assessment and triggering to build toilets and a communal wastewater treatment plant (IPAL Komunal) in RT 09, Kelurahan Foramadiahi. Domestic wastewater management operators in six districts in East Java used sanitation index to evaluate their performance and improve their services.
