Editorial
First of all, we wish you a happy new year 2018. This USAID IUWASH PLUS E-newsletter, January 2018 Edition presents interesting stories that happened during the implementation of USAID IUWASH PLUS Project Year 1 in 2017. During that time, we realized that efforts for increasing access to water supply and sanitation still face many challenges, particularly in terms of financing. Related to that, we present various solutions to overcome the financing challenges in the WASH sector. In Sukoharjo, Pak Was, Chairperson of BKM Wahyu Tumurun has allocated the profit of BKM’s activities for financing the construction of latrines for poor families. Furthermore, various innovative financing schemes in the WASH sector presented in KSAN 2017 are also discussed in this bulletin. In addition to the role of innovative financing, this bulletin also includes how local innovations also play a role in addressing the challenges of the WASH sector, for example, water-pressure sensor prototypes developed by local makers to help PDAMs in Bekasi and Bogor City to measure the water pressure on pipes. Good news is also reported from Lumajang, where PDAM in this district has successfully implemented GIS to improve its services. In addition, triggering activities of hygiene behavior for fishermen in Hamadi, Jayapura were conducted successfully. Hopefully, this E-newsletter’s January 2018 Edition is useful and can provide inspiration. Happy Reading!
