MoU Strengthens The Commitment of Government of Sibolga City and USAID IUWASH PLUS for WASH Sector

On the 317th anniversary day of Sibolga City on April 3, 2017, the government of Sibolga City and USAID IUWASH PLUS have signed the Partnership Agreement on the Implementation of Indonesia Urban Water, Sanitation and Hygiene Penyehatan Lingkungan untuk Semua Program in Sibolga City. The agreement was signed by the Mayor of Sibolga City M. Syarfi Hutauruk and USAID IUWASH PLUS Institutional Development Advisor Foort Bustraan observed by Governor of North Sumatra Tengku Erry Nuradi, Vice Mayor of Sibolga Edi Polo Sitanggang, Head and Vice of Sibolga DPRD, OPD of North Sumatra, OPD of Sibolga and USAID IUWASH PLUS Regional Manager of North Sumatra Mohamad Yagi.

In his remarks, Mayor of Sibolga stated that USAID assisted Progam in Sibolga City has been initiated by previous IUWASH and now it is continued by IUWASH PLUS. The government of Sibolga City welcomed this partnerships and fully supported this sanitation movement. As the city that located close to the Strategic National Tourism Area of Toba Lake, it is very important for Sibolga to improve the sanitation and hygiene sector in order to attract tourist visits.

Governor of North Sumatra Utara Tengku Erry Nuradi in his opening remark expressed his appreciation for USAID IUWASH PLUS that has partnerships with several districts/cities in North Sumatra Province includes Sibolga City. This agreement is significant for North Sumatra and selected districts/cities considering that WASH sector still required improvements. As we know that more than half of North Sumatra population with the total number of 13.2 million people are residing in cities. In fact, 70% of urban population do not have access to water supply in their homes.

Furthermore, Tengku Erry Nuradi appreciated the work of Mayor of Sibolga, M. Syarfi Hutauruk that has partnerships with stakeholders in developing the Sibolga City to become better and more beautiful place. “The partnerships with USAID IUWASH PLUS is very important for improving access to water supply and sanitation considering that water and sanitation are the basic needs for the people.” stated by Tengku Erry Nuradi
