USAID IUWASH PLUS in cooperation with Surabaya Municipal Drinking Water Company (PDAM), and Yayasan Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih (YPP) held a kick-off ceremony for the Master Meter, a communal water supply system, construction in Kampung Wonosari in Pegirian urban village, Surabaya city, East Java on August 20, 2018.
The Master Meter will be built to provide safe water access for 25 low income households in Kampung Wonosari. This construction is supported by Yayasan Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih (YPP) – the foundation managing PT. Surya Citra Media Tbk’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programs, PDAM Surabaya, USAID IUWASH PLUS through Local Sustainability and Innovation Component (LSIC) activity, and YISI (Yayasan Investasi Sosial Indonesia – an NGO focusing on social investment in Indonesia). Through USAID IUWASH PLUS’ LSIC activity, YISI is selected to assist community members in Kampung Wonosari to build and manage the Master Meter.
Around 50 people representing Yayasan Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih (YPP), PDAM Surabaya, USAID IUWASH PLUS, YISI, community leaders, and community-based organizations (CBO) who will manage the Master Meter attended the kick-off ceremony for the Master Meter construction in Kampung Wonosari.
The event began with a dialogue on the current water access situation in Kampung Wonosari. Mustari, a community leader, said that water is not easily accessible in this area. The community members have to spend more than Rp 60 thousands every month to purchase water.
Responding to Mustari’s statement, the Director of Yayasan Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih (YPP), Imam Sudjarwo said that the foundation is eager to work with PDAM Surabaya, USAID IUWASH PLUS, and community members to make water more accessible and affordable. “I hope the Master Meter will help solve the water access issues,” Imam shared his expectation on the Master Meter.
Following the dialogue, the directors of Yayasan Pundi Amal Peduli Kasih (YPP), PDAM Surabaya, USAID IUWASH PLUS as well as the Head of Pegirian urban village and the CBO Coordinator observed the Master Meter and witnessed the Master Meter trench pipe excavation process. At the end of the ceremony, they signed the Master Meter construction sign board to mark beginning of the Master Meter construction in Kampung Wonosari.
