On February 14th, 2023, Project Representative Officer of USAID Indonesia, Alexis Polovinia, observed the participatory assessment that USAID IUWASH Tangguh facilitated in Penfui Timur village, in Kupang district. Through this activity, the community was encouraged to map their water and sanitation access using participatory methods.
The participatory assessment found that only a small portion of the villagers have access to PDAM water. The villagers, who do not have access to the utility water supply service, use the deep wells as the water source or purchase water from water traders. In addition, some of the families in Penfui Timur have toilets with permeable fecal containment and some others only use latrines without any fecal containment.
Community’s lack of understanding on safely managed drinking water and sanitation and limited financial capacity are some of the reasons impeding them to own and use the safely managed drinking water and sanitation facilities. Through the participatory assessment activity, USAID IUWASH Tangguh encourages the community to map their issues in water supply and sanitation access and plan solutions, such as seeking financial support from the private sector.
Alexis Polovinia hopes that community members in Penfui Timur could get benefits from USAID IUWASH Tangguh to improve water supply and sanitation access.
Similarly, one of the villagers, Yani Giri, hopes that USAID IUWASH Tangguh could support community members who have not yet received PDAM water service and have not yet had toilets to have the facilities.
