From July 10 – 14, 2017, USAID IUWASH PLUS supported the Bekasi City Health Office in organizing a capacity building training for the sanitarian and cadres in triggering and promoting urban sanitation in Bekasi City. This training is a strategy to build the capacity of Community Health Center (Puskesmas) mobile staffs (sanitarian and cadre) in facilitating the participatory assessment activities, triggering the behavior change, as well as sustainable monitoring in the community.
The training was attended by 30 participants consisting of sanitarians, environmental health staffs and health cadres from 15 Puskesmas at Kelurahan level in Bekasi City. Those Puskesmas were selected due to high levels of open defecation in those areas.
The materials delivered in this training included the introduction of USAID IUWASH PLUS, safely managed sanitation, capturing the sanitation condition, facilitation technique, participative assessment and promotion of scheduled desludging service by UPTD PALD Bekasi City.
“I have attended many trainings, yet, this training is different, both in the contents and training delivery. It gave me many new information and knowledge, especially about what sanitation should be like, that the septic tank can be communal and should be desludged,” said Bu Asnah, a health cadre from Pondok Gede Kelurahan.”
